Have you ever dreamed of hiring a vintage Mustang and driving from the windy city of Chicago cross country to LA? Route 66 has more myth and legend than any other road in the world. Follow in the footsteps of Billy Connolly or step back in time, Don Draper-style, for the experience of a lifetime.
Kicking off in Chicago, home to some of America’s most stunning architecture, Route 66 – as the song states – will take you through some pretty obscure towns that don’t offer much in the way of hospitality. What they do offer, however, is truckloads of kitsch old diners, weird attractions such as The Big Chair and the Amish counties where you will witness the old ways including horse drawn carts and ploughs.
Driving not your thing? There are plenty of tour operators that offer group Harley Davidson rides (self-drive or as a passenger) or you could take the even easier option and join a small hosted tour group.
Travelling past the Grand Canyon and on through the craziness of Las Vegas, the Route 66 highway ends in Santa Monica where you can wind up your trip across the USA with a stroll along the pier, a ride on the Ferris Wheel or possibly even by smoking a fully legalised marijuana cigarette. Either way, you’re sure to have gotten plenty of kicks on one of the world’s most popular highways.
